Vanimo Base Visit
As part of my (Shiv’s) new-old job of Acting Deputy Ground Operations Manager, I visited Vanimo Base recently. Vanimo has only been re-opened as a MAF base in the past 3 years, so this was my first visit ever to Vanimo, on the north coast of PNG, about an hour’s flight from Telefomin. Vanimo is very close to the border with Indonesia so you can actually drive across the border to Jiapura.
The Base Manager, Albert, was working very hard to prepare manifests and get his passengers ready, but we managed to find a few minutes to chat through some of his concerns and problems. He’s in an office which MAF rents, at the back of a hangar, but the contract on this office will expire soon, so I will likely have to return to Vanimo within the next month to help Albert with the transition to a new office.
