Building a Fence

For the past 3 office days, Ryan hasn’t actually been in the office, he’s been outside in the sun and a bit of rain to put up a new fence to stop people from walking across the area where we park our aircraft.

Telefomin is not exactly a secure airstrip, you don’t have to walk very far to find a hole in the fence or even a purposeful gap in it. But where we store our fuel drums and park our aircraft, there is a more significant risk that if people walk across there, they could get in the way of our operations which could mean they get bumped by a cargo trolley or they could interrupt a pilot during his daily. There are a number of safety considerations why a new fence covering just 15 metres was necessary. We could have waited for our wonderful MAF Maintenance Team to come out and do it, but they are very busy and may not have been able to come out to Telefomin again this year (they’ve been out here several times already!), so Ryan decided to do it himself, with a little help from our two Traffic Officers, Eugene & Steven.

The concrete is laid! You can still see the old fence, partially pulled-down, which people often walked over or through.

The finished product, a very smart, tall fence to improve safety at Telefomin Base!

Here you can see the new fence and where it is protecting both the fuel storage area and the aircraft parking bays.
